TRACING HIS FINGERPRINTS

Going through the motions of life is a passive state that no one should desire to live by, merely because  it is an insignificant life and yet sometimes we go through life without any notice of the Lord’s hand upon our lives. We  become spectators in our own lives and like any sport, the thrill of the game is experienced in full by those in the field. We actively pinpoint the faults, victories and moves in other peoples lives such that we miss God’s move in our own lives. It remains to be a blur just how we are so oblivious to God’s active working in us and yet we take a front row seat to applaud others. Until we fully comprehend that God is engaged in our lives like He is in others, we will always see ourselves as deficient. So I wonder,  how do we live in a conscious state of His move?

A life lived by default, without the acknowledgement of God’s sovereignty in every detail is not a life to be enjoyed.

Consciousness is  strength. The more conscious you are concerning the works of God, the more likely you are to grow in faith and in holy anticipation to live in the outpour of His blessings. It’s a tragedy to miss His touch. It reflects our misalignment. Thankful for Brother Lawrence , who inspired me to borrow from his  personal goal, a goal that has been added to my lifelong prayer and daily desire. What’s the goal ?  The goal is to walk as in God’s presence.

A fingerprint is an impression left by the friction ridges of a human finger (Thanks Wikipedia);  that is a means of personal identification since it is unique to each individual.  A fingerprint helps us discover the identity and God’s fingerprint is evident throughout our lives not only because we are made from Him or that He is the author of every thing but because as a Father He is intentional about His involvement in our lives. In an African setting, a child is not their parents alone, at least from where I have grown, it is said that it takes a village to raise a child and thus each person the child interacts with starting from teachers, neighbors, pastors all leave impressions in the child’s life that shape him /her into the person he is/ becomes and all through life, we can trace the influence of various people. True?

In good and bad situations, we can always look back and see God’s hand in our lives…both in the past and in the present though intangible and invisible. I guess that is why Paul in (Romans 8:28), reminds us that all things work together for good because it signified greater glory that abounds in every circumstance because God has His hand in it. God is a personal God

The evidence of God’s touch can be found everywhere along the journey of a commonplace life.’ John Samways.

(Genesis 28:16) “Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it” Whilst Jacob was caught up in a dream and the revelation He saw in a vision predated this confession, it is  true for many of us that we are awake yet not cognisant of the Lord’s presence. Our spiritual eyes are shut and we are prone to focus on what is only seen (the obvious and practical) which as Paul tells us is temporary. (2 Corinthians 4:18)

Failure to be aware robs God of the instant praise that He deserves in that moment. If you have visited  monumental sites such a Fort Jesus or any with stones, many tourists (you included) like to leave a mark signifying their presence #Chebetwashere. I have. We go on living lives affirming our own steps when instead we should ask:

  • “Is God here?” to guide us in whether to move forward or not and to help us glorify Him and tap into His move in that moment.
  • “Will God’s presence be in our midst?”  To build anticipation to receive His touch and guide in decisions.

God is Omni Present , we could never hide from Him (Psalms 139:7-10) and yet it takes spiritual consciousness to benefit and marvel from the glory found in His presence in every waking moment.

(2 Kings 6:17) is what I call a prayer of perspective. In Perspective, lies the power to either magnify or demean the value of an occurrence as well as lead us into consciousness. Poor perspective can shut us from seeing as is and we become the category of people Isaiah talks about in (Isaiah 6:9-10)

Another hindrance is when we are confined to tracing Him in the ways we are used to or imagine He will reveal Himself through .(1 Kings 19:11-12) shows how the Lord was not seen in the earthquakes and in the wind as you would ideally expect. Had Elijah shrugged and shut off waiting on the Lord because the Lord wasn’t in the earthquake or fire, he would’ve missed the visitation that came with direction and affirmation. It was the still small voice that he inclined his ear to listen that confirmed the Lord’s presence. This still small voice can be likened to the “small stuff” in our life that we quickly qualify as coincidence.

Where then does the secret lie?

  1. Through the study of God’s Word, which is the map in which we get a glimpse of how God moves we can use it as a reference. Show up and eat His word daily and experience a rejoicing of heart (Jeremiah 15:16) Be made wise and enlightened through His law (Psalms 19:7) .
  2. Consistent communion through prayer also sets us up to be able to be told the secret things of the Spirit and it is in the quiet that our hearts become accustomed to God’s voice that we may know when He is leading us (John 10:27).
  3. Gratitude. (1 Thessalonians 5:18) In everything gives thanks…. Read more on cultivating a heart of gratitude here
  4. Endless invitation and involvement.

I like reading about the hand of God upon the lives of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Ezra, Asa, Hezekiah, Esther, Ruth and Paul but I am even more delighted in seeing how He is presently moving in my life, because He is. The goodness seen in the days of old is what we can still enjoy this day; only pause, meditate, reflect and allow your heart to fully comprehend the sovereignty of God in every detail of your life.

To see Him everywhere, you have to involve Him in everything.

Start by making spontaneous prayers as you walk, talk, eat, rest, watch a movie, converse, exercise etcetera. (those little things throughout your day that you can simply shoot a quick prayer to the Lord over) : Ask God to help you quickly board a matatu and see him even bring along a friend who offers you a ride. Invite God with you to work and talk to Him as you draft that proposal, ask for wisdom and see Him grant you favor. As you make that cup of coffee at the office, rejoice that you have a working space and see God glorify Himself in the office through you. When frustrated by a coworker and your nerves threaten to be miraculously loosed , pray that God would give you a heart of love.  When anger creeps in and the words you are tempted to utter to your neighbor brings distaste to your own mouth, ask God to sweeten them because only sweet words can gladden the soul and impart grace.

“The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God on as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees.” Brother Lawrence.

God is in the details but you have to match the intentionality by doing due diligence and involving your ever present companion . I love what authors and scholars have said “God is a gentleman, He will not force Himself on you by forcefully inviting Himself in.”  It requires you to let Him in. “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8 )Let Him in and you are on the path of living a conscious life that will see Him in everything that will invoke the promise of God showing up mighty and strong for your sake.

You are light and you are so loved. Stay anchored and keep His light shining through.
