Just mentioning the word highway feels like a harsh reminder of what we cannot entirely enjoy in this moment ;considering the current limitations of travel in and out of specific counties in our nation Kenya. My heartfelt concerns go to those who have been greatly affected ; in scenarios where you are separated from your loved ones or have had to forego certain functions like burials because of restrictions or perhaps you even desired to move your family upcountry to ease the burden of some resources. It is hard to joyfully comply when we have pressing matters that seem to weigh us down but I believe in due time, in God’s time, we will cross over to the other side where we will enjoy the freedom of movement, reunions and more so, healing!
“But the lovers of God walk on the highway of light,
and their way shines brighter and brighter
until they bring forth the perfect day.” Proverbs 4:18
Light has been known to be a representation of a believer’s desired output. We see it mentioned in the gospel of Matthew 5:14-16 which is one of the most quoted scriptures when we mention light. It is also no surprise that it is featured as one of the 7 “I am statements” of Jesus in John 8:12
I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.
Staying on the highway of light can never be by default.
HIGHWAY COMPONENTS
LANES
I never liked the Model Town Board while in driving school, which is ironic since that is the actual representation of the road I intend to use as I drive. I think the instructors just made it complicated to frustrate us. Luckily, I had such an amazing friend who simplified things for me and I aced the test! What helped in terms of navigating was always the clarity of where a vehicle was headed and the choice of the lane(s) to get you there. Not every lane will get you where you intend to go which is the same way in Christianity. No matter how inventive we get in modifying truths to suit us, no combination of shortcuts will get us to the path of life! Matthew 7:13 already illustrates that it is not an easy path to walk through but having the the destination in mind (Eternal Life) will keep you choosing the right path Daily! Which lane are you on? Is it a lane leading you to eternal life? Do you need to change lanes?
POINTERS AND SIGNS- Warnings and Cautions
STOP! BUMP AHEAD! LEFT SHARP BEND AHEAD! are some of the highway signs. I cannot imagine how dangerous it would be to drive without cautionary signs- accidents would be a frequent occurrence and our roads unsafe. In the same manner, the Word of God has all the pointers we need to look out for as we work out our salvation with fear and trembling. When your eyes wander, the Holy Spirit quickens you. When pride tries to find room in your heart, you are reminded that it is the path to destruction and the cause of strife. When you want to lie, you remember that lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. However, you can’t know what the signs mean or what action to take unless you study them. Do you intentionally immerse yourself in seeking out the truths of God to be able to interpret situations using it? How familiar are you with the word of God?
GUIDES- Directions
Picture yourself driving around and then you suddenly realize you cannot find your bearing, you cannot trace even how you got to that point let alone where you are headed and there is no one in sight to help you figure it out. How frustrating is that?
Thankfully we never have to wander in life because the word of God has all the answers we seek. and the moment we receive Jesus,we are never alone by virtue of the gift of the Holy Spirit. He is our prompter, our helper, our guide and the voice of truth from the Father. Isaiah 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,“This is the way, walk in it,”Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.”
Are you making room for the Holy Spirit? have you made Him a friend? A permanent guide? Are you in the habit of waiting on Him for direction or do you need to cultivate that starting now?
POLICEMEN
We fear rebuke, correction and punishment and sometimes we evade police officers because they are law enforcers and sometimes they call out our mistakes just like our Pastors often do (our spiritual policemen). They help us see and understand the magnitude of our mistakes when we would have otherwise passed them off as nothing if it were up to us. When we listen to their counsel, we avoid accidents (sin)and its consequences.
Additionally they also guide us because of their experience, that is,what they have seen that we won’t see or experience in a long time. Being human,we are often tempted to think we know it all but having spiritual covering is essential for every believer. Have you allowed yourself to receive counsel? Are you accountable? Do you heed correction?
FELLOW DRIVERS
Right now, as I find my footing and increase the level of confidence on the highway as I drive, I will admit that I definitely feel comfortable being alone or at least with two other drivers. However, I know that there is a certain comfort of having others by your side. Who will help you when your car tyre bursts? Who will jump start your vehicle? The joy of watching people drive together and seeing their diverse vehicles ( in this case vehicles being a representation of gifts) is such a joy. We don’t walk alone, we are never meant to walk alone. Fellowship is God’s gift.
Are you continuously immersing yourself into a community? Are you an encourager of their talent? Are you a helper? Are you willing to grow and contribute to the growth of others? Community helps us to keep our passion fueled and aflame!
WATCH WHERE YOU’RE GOING.
With fixed purpose, looking straight ahead,
ignore life’s distractions.
26 Watch where you’re going!
Stick to the path of truth,
and the road will be safe and smooth before you.
27 Don’t allow yourself to be sidetracked for even a moment
or take the detour that leads to darkness.
Refuse to get swallowed up in the darkness of the world.
Awesome awesome read, when reading this I am reminded of 2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? _Unless indeed you are disqualified. For us to stay in the highway of light it’s very important we examine ourselves. You have explained it so well using the driving analogy, thanks so much Chebby for this,I choose the Highway of light.
Love this. Thank you for that verse reminder dear. It is crucial we keep examining ourselves as to whether we are in the faith so we don’t lose track.
Thank you so much dear.
???❤❤
Staying on the Highway of light can never be by default…it is a choice we make everyday. Learning that not every lane will get me to where I intend to go is a sound reminder.
This has blessed my heart. Thank you so much for bringing this out so well❤
