Matthew 5:8 ; Psalms 24:4 ; Jeremiah 4:14 ; Revelation 22:4
Clean my hands, purify my heart, the famous lyrics of Refiner by Maverick, is an endless prayer for every Christian. Psalms 139:23-24 being at the core Search me O God, try me and examine me and see if there is any wicked way in me…and lead me to the way everlasting. True religion equals pure undefiled hearts; free from malice, hate, greed, envy etc. While we live in a society that is concerned with visuals and physique and outward acts, one thing that remains is that God will always look at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7 ; Psalms 26:2 )
Out of the heart spring all issues of life (Proverbs 4:23) and I am inclined to say that this is the beatitude that cements and incorporates all the other because of it’s comprehensiveness. Here in, stems all the actions we do; whether we are meek, merciful or peace makers, the state of our heart will determine whether the actions were conducted with pure motives. (1 Timothy 1:5)
There is one privilege that not everyone can enjoy. To behold His manifest presence, to enjoy communion with Him. Only those with the purity of heart can get access. Granted, we will all face Him on the day of judgement (2 Corinthians 5:10) but only those who are pure in heart can behold Him and His glory. Allow me to categorically begin with the catchy promise so that we become more drawn and inclined to pursue this virtue of perfection. Sometimes we need to see what is at the end of the table / deal that we may be motivated to strive towards the aforementioned requirement.
- You will see God
- You will dwell with Him
- You will behold His majestic presence
- You will see His glory
- You will sit with Him
- You will see God.; the one whom you have worshipped in faith, the one in whom your praise and existence all your life has revolved around, the one in whom all things exists, you will see Him. This God, only if you are pure in heart.
- You will awake at His likeness
What other form of happiness and rejoicing can be compared to that?
“Christ was dealing with men’s spirits, with their inner and spiritual nature. He does not say “Blessed are the pure in language, or the pure in action much less blessed are the pure in ceremonies or in raiment or in food, He says Blessed are the pure in heart.” Spurgeon
DEVOTED HEARTS- Single Minded Devotion
The beginning point of a pure heart starts in a great understanding concerning why we were created. We were made to worship. We were created to love God and live for Him alone. More than anything, we should strive to be those who live for the audience of one. Those who do not shy away from evil out of fear of punishment but those who strive to live holy lives that are guided by a pure heart out of adoration for the father. He is holy, we must be holy (1 Peter 1:16) The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10) and this wisdom from above will guide and instruct. This wisdom will illuminate the paths of the righteous (Proverbs 4:16)
CIRCUMCISED HEARTS- INWARD PURITY
We wander. He chases. Sometimes we place our pursuits above His will and yet still God offers us renewal just like He offered the Israelites; inviting them to the greater renewal, circumcised hearts; the invitation to put to the death the things of this world and to filter even the good that distracts. Psalms 51: 6 “you desire truth in the inward parts”
“And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.” Deuteronomy 30:6
What pleasure could an unsanctified soul take in the vision of a holy God? As he cannot endure to look upon their iniquity, so they cannot endure to look upon his purity.
(Isaiah 29:13 ; Ezekiel 33:31-32) is a clear indication that sometimes we can move about doing great things for God while we are not yet moved at the core- our hearts. We can sail through assuming the posture of those that have been touched yet we remain in the pursuit of lesser gains. Not moved to seek, not moved to obey and not moved to tirelessly pursue which is why God invites us to drink from His well daily.
Dull hearts hinder the message from being of effect. (Matthew 13:15). I read the book of Thessalonians this morning and I was blown away by the extent with which this church received the word, lived by it and shared it thus becoming an example to other churches (1 Thessalonians 1:6-10) They allowed their hearts to be moved by the transformative word of God. James 1:21 says “….receive with meekness the word which is able to save your souls” and might I add, the word that is able to correct, rebuke and train in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16)
The Pharisees are a prime example of outward purity seekers . Luke 11:39 “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness” and yet this is unavailing when it comes to pleasing the father.
O what joy it shall be to behold His great presence. The requirement is a pure heart, let us strive to make our home a place the lord delights to dwell in each day.
