While Words of Affirmation may not be top of the list for every individual as based on the Five Love languages assessment test from Gary Chapman, we can agree that words are powerful and some needed truths spoken over our lives go a long way in uplifting our spirits.

Relationships are God’s gift to us. He has never intended for us to do life alone. He saw the need for companion which is why Adam got the gift of Eve. You are a wife/ husband, son/ daughter, a sister/brother, mother/ father , a friend and so on. Relationships are part and parcel of our lives. While we may delight in it and enjoy some of the perks, it is no lie that they tend to leave us shattered and broken sometimes.

Our families disappoint us, our friends betray us…be it in how they treat us or how they speak to us and about us. When we value people we tend to value their opinion and whatever they say affects us. True? As seen from the previous stories, harsh parenting, absentee parents, abandonment ,even break ups have a way of shaping how we see ourselves in light of the circumstances we go through. Because we are invested in the relationships, we are always left with scars and slowly by slowly the walls we build to protect ourselves get higher and we still remain stuck with their perceptions of us.

Further along as we live, it doesn’t just ruin our relationship with fellow men but it also affects how we deal with our Father. I loved what someone said in a comment from the previous stories; she highlighted that it gets hard for us to get to a place of reunion even with the Heavenly Father because we easily project the nature of man on to God. But what does God really say? What does He really think of us? Of you as an individual?

While men may regard us differently with varying circumstances, God’s truth about us does not change! He is consistent with His thoughts towards us. I hope the following affirmations will bring some warmth into your heart and that you will begin to see yourself as He sees you and identify with what He has called you.

2 Corinthians 6:16 “I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters,” Says the Lord Almighty.”

1 John 3:1(a) “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!

John 1:12  “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.

Galatians 3:26 “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Our citizenship is primarily in heaven. Even as we walk through life on earth, we have an eternal home where Jesus went to prepare for us.

Philippians 3:20 “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,”

Ephesians 2:19 “Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God’s very own family, citizens of God’s country, and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.”

1 Corinthians 12:12-24 “Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.”  Each member is  important and cannot be gotten rid of and together they all experience a sense of belonging….because by  one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.

Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Jeremiah 31:3 I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

Isaiah 54:10 Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. NIV

Oh and not to forget the gift of His son, Jesus. John 3:16 . No greater expression of love such love as this. John 15:13

In every relationship, there is this burning desire to be known. Known for more than just what you do, how you are or how you look..to be seen for more than just the visible aspects of  you. If there is anyone who is great at that, its God. Psalms 139 is rich in revealing this about God. I encourage you to read the entire chapter.

Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;”

Isaiah 43: 1 “….I have called you by your name…”

Isaiah 49:16 See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me.”

Luke 12:7But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore;”

“Just as the sky is God’s canvas, so are our lives.” A friend of mine shared this yesterday and it is such a comforting truth. That the Most High is aware and mindful of all that concerns you and me.

Colossians 3:12  “…..as the elect of God, holy and beloved put on tender mercies….” (Paul is outlining the character of the new man in the church of Colosse…and even as we receive these commands, it is key to note that we are His elect. )

John 15:16 “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.” (We are chosen for more than just existence…we are chosen for assignments and to do great exploits for God’s kingdom! )

Acts 9:15 “……for he is a chosen vessel of Mine. I have translated this scripture and in Edith’s version, I say . “I am His personal choice!”

1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people,”

1 Thessalonians 1:4 “We know that God has chosen you, dear brothers, much beloved of God” TLB

Romans 15:7 “Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.”

Colossians 1:21-22 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.”

Don’t we all long for these words in every relationship we get into? To be loved, accepted, seen, known and to belong?  Even when we don’t deserve it, we already have that…with God. By grace ,He sends us people to even further illuminate that light of love towards us and even when we get hurt, He assures us His presence always!

Dear Child,  You crave for affection, approval and affirmation and I have gifted you that. Hold onto these truths like I have held onto you from the beginning. You are my child. You belong to me and with me in my Kingdom. You are loved eternally by me. You are seen by me. You are Known. You are chosen by me and You are accepted. You are part of my family. I am your Father, your Friend and you are mine. Any time, you need reassurance, turn to me. You may feel unworthy sometimes but these are my eternal promises to you. My love, you will have till eternity.

Love, Your Heavenly Father , God.

These truths may not immediately right every wrong in your life that you have suffered from associations with people but gradually as you ponder on them and look at the many ways that God extends it to you, you will learn to hold onto His truths and bounce off every lie from the enemy.

Write them on a note card, your phone’s screensaver, stick it on your bathroom wall or the front page of your journal. Let it be a reminder.

You are light and you are so loved.

May His light shine in you, through you and in everything you do. Do not stay hidden. Let Him be glorified.
